MISS NAMIBIA 2018 SET'S THE RECORD STRAIGHT?

Michelle Challa Prestorius

MISS Namibia national director Conny Maritz has denied rumors that one of the contestants for the 2019 pageant has withdrawn due to bullying on social media, this was according to the Namibia newspaper, dated  2019-05-17

"Yes, I am aware of these allegations, but it is not true,” said Maritz. She did, however, clarify that the contestant, Michelle Pretorius, has withdrawn from the competition this week due to personal commitments.

Following Pretorius' withdrawal from the competition, it was alleged that Michele withdrew from the prestigious event because of social media bullying.

The photographs of the top 30 semi-finalists have been met with mixed reactions, with some members of the public posting negative comments on their physical appearance.

Though the contestant and the director of Miss Namibia have declined the rumor, Miss Namibia 2018 has confirmed the rumor to be true, the video attached explains what happened, " Guys one of these girls drop out of the competition, one girl actually dropped out because of the feedback she has been getting under her picture"

Michelle rushed to her Facebook profile, to set according to her set the facts straight regarding her withdrawal and this is what she posts on her facebook profile

"In order to clear up all the misconceptions going around on social media, I would just like to confirm that my withdrawal from Miss Namibia is purely related to my commitment to my studies and future career. Unfortunately, the Miss Namibia obligations coincide with my study commitments, which was not apparent from the beginning and it would be unfair to only give half of my attention to such a reputable organization, such as Miss Namibia. The comments made on social media did not impact my decision and the negativity of others does in no way diminish my self-worth and confidence. It is however really sad to see our own Namibian people criticizing our young women, who put themselves out there and who have the courage to strive and make a difference. If my Miss Namibia journey has taught me anything, it is that there are so many young women out there who are passionate about their country and they deserve our upliftment and support".

The article further stated that former Miss Namibia Suné January also took it to social media to express her disappointment.

"Everyone hating on some of these girls must know that the pictures were part of the audition, therefore it was submitted by the girls themselves. I see a lot of women breaking down these girls. What happened to women's empowerment? All of these ladies have a dream and we must encourage dreams. Let's respect that."
"It's not our appearance that doesn't get us placed internationally, it's the country's lack of support."

Conny Maritz said all the semi-finalists are beautiful and do not deserve the public scrutiny they have been receiving.

"People must know that the contestants have submitted their pictures by themselves. Some ladies might not look as great, because they don't have pictures that are taken by a professional.
